Failure mode - Ford 6.0L Power Stroke
FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) failure
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- hard start when cold; extended crank
- dead cylinder or rough miss, worst when cold, improving as the engine warms
- buck / surge at light load
- sudden stall while driving with total loss of throttle response; may or may not restart
- buzzing / fizzle noise from the FICM under the hood
Root cause
The FICM steps 12V up to roughly 48V to fire the injector solenoids. The power-supply section degrades from heat and, critically, from chronic low battery voltage (weak batteries kill FICMs). Solder-joint and MOSFET failures are typical. The FICM sits on top of the left valve cover; its harness connector retainers commonly break during other repairs and let the connector back out, and the engine-valley wiring harness can chafe and short.
Diagnosis
- with a scan tool monitor: FICM SYNC must read 'yes' while cranking (no = loss of cam/crank signal, not the FICM)
- FICM L power and V power should each stay above 11.5V; if either is below, load-test the batteries first
- FICM M (main) power should read 45V or above; significantly below 45V with L/V power OK points to the FICM; roughly 35V or lower can cause a no-start
- a healthy FICM sends about a 20A pulse to each injector when firing
- load-test and, if needed, replace both batteries FIRST
- inspect the FICM connector retainers and the valley wiring harness for chafing / back-out
Fixes
confirm both batteries are healthy and terminals clean (do this first) ()
- battery (part category - specific model not chosen)
FICM power-supply rebuild, or replacement (higher-output aftermarket units around 58V are available and more tolerant) ()
- ficm (part category - specific model not chosen)
- ficm-power-supply (part category - specific model not chosen)
