Failure mode - Ford 6.4L Power Stroke
Valve guide wear (no bronze sleeves)
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- oil consumption via guides; blue smoke at startup in advanced cases
- valve seat/guide wear found at top-end service
- long-run risk: dropped valve damage
Root cause
The sourced history notes 6.4 heads ran valve guides WITHOUT bronze sleeves (unlike reinforced practice); wear shows at high mileage and is addressed at head service. Preventive bronze-lining is a specialist option at rebuild.
Diagnosis
- top-end inspection at rebuild; guide-to-stem clearance measurement
- watch oil consumption/vapor traces as leading indicators
Fixes
at head service: bronze-guide lining/replace guides (specialist), or reman head ()
- cylinder-head-service (part category - specific model not chosen)
