3V spark plug service: remove original plugs without breakage, install the one-piece update. The single most valuable preventive job on a 3V Triton: get the original two-piece plugs out before they break, and put in the one-piece update. Ford's own removal instructions (TSB 06152) exist because the breakage rate was high. After the update, future services are routine.
Parts
- Spark Plugs, 3V heads, one-piece updated (Motorcraft SP-546 / Ford PZK-14F) - one-piece plugs end the breakage risk for all future services (qty 1)
- Broken Spark Plug Removal Tool, 3V (Lisle 65600) - have the extraction tool on hand BEFORE starting - mid-job is the wrong time to order it (qty 1)
Install order
- Verify plug history: original two-piece plugs are assumed on any 3V engine without documented plug service.
- Blow out the plug wells BEFORE removing the plugs - debris down the well is a separate failure.
- Hot-soak the engine per the TSB 06152 sequence and back the plugs out SLOWLY; stop at any resistance and work it, never force.
- If a plug breaks: extract the shell with the removal tool per its instructions, then continue.
- Install the one-piece updated plugs with the specified gap and torque; refit coils/boots and check the boots for tracking while there.
Expected outcome
A 3V engine that no longer carries the breakage risk; routine plug services afterwards.
Do not
- Do NOT remove original 3V plugs cold and fast - that is the breakage recipe.
- Do NOT run the job without the extraction tool on hand.
- Do NOT use anti-seize or anything on the plug threads beyond what the plug maker specifies.
