Recipe - Ford 6.0L Power Stroke
Tow Reliability build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
For a stock-power 6.0 used to tow, with no full bulletproof budget yet. Focuses on the failures that strand you on a grade: hard hot-start (STC), FICM, cooling wear, and diagnosing the oil cooler before it takes the EGR cooler with it.
Parts
- 6.0L Power Stroke STC Fitting Update Kit (high-pressure oil rail) - the #1 hot-restart failure on 2004.5+ trucks; strands you at fuel stops (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Standpipe & Dummy Plug O-Ring Kit - same job, related HPO leaks and aeration (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke IPR Valve (Injection Pressure Regulator) with screen & o-rings - clean or replace with new screen/o-rings while in the HPO system (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke FICM Power Supply (rebuild board, higher output) - proactive - a FICM failing under a towing load / heat is a roadside no-start (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Water Pump - wear item; failure under tow load = overheat (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Thermostat - done with the water pump (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Coolant Filtration Kit (spin-on) - protect the coolers (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Engine Oil Cooler (valley, oil-to-coolant) - ONLY if the EOT-ECT delta test shows restriction (see fm-6-0-oil-cooler-clog); otherwise defer to a bulletproof job (qty 1)
Install order
- run the EOT-ECT delta test under load; if restricted, the oil cooler moves from optional to required and this becomes a partial bulletproof job
- STC fitting + standpipe o-rings (+ IPR service while open)
- FICM power-supply upgrade
- water pump + thermostat + coolant filter + fresh coolant
Expected outcome
Removes the common roadside-failure modes for a towing truck at stock power. Not a full bulletproof - if the oil cooler is already restricted, do recipe-6-0-bulletproof-budget instead.
Do not
- do not replace the EGR cooler alone if the oil cooler is restricted - do both
- do not tow heavy on a truck with a known-failing FICM or STC fitting
Estimated cost: $1500-$3000 parts (rough) · STC fitting and FICM power supply are DIY-friendly; the water pump is moderate. Oil cooler (if needed) is a shop job.
